Its foundation was established by the Australian Parliament in 1946. The institution was first intended as a postgraduate college, but later developed a successful undergraduate division, and successfully merged with Canberra University College in the 1960s.
Today, ANU is a well-known academic authority organised into seven colleges.

Some of the buildings within Acton campus have been included in a local heritage list, preserving sites related to the establishment of the Australian capital. ANU’s also receives a considerable endowment in order to fund the operation of these facilities.
Apart from boasting several Nobel Laureates, ANU is also the alma mater of important political figures in Australia such as former Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and Bob Hawke.
